Brighton uses a continuum of special education models. Brighton staff members constantly work to create the best option for each student who is receiving special education.
The District is committed to providing services to the greatest extent possible in the least restrictive environment. The concept of least restrictive environment ensures that, whenever feasible, students with disabilities will be educated with their non disabled peers. The models currently in use are as follows:
Consultant teacher services are provided to students in the regular classroom for a minimum of two hours per week. The special education teacher works directly with the students in the class and/or with the classroom teacher to prepare materials, modify delivery of instruction or design other appropriate interventions to ensure the student will be able to benefit from the general classroom setting.
Inclusion models provide services in the general class setting. Support services are delivered to the student in the regular classroom to the extent which is appropriate.
Resource rooms provide support services for students with disabilities. There is an emphasis on remediation and supplementary support for academic classes. Students work in groups of up to five students, and their resource room program is closely coordinated with the general classroom program. Students can spend up to 50% of the day in the resource room setting.
Special self-contained classes are designed for students who need a small, structured environment. There are multiple models for our self-contained programming. These models are adjusted based on the needs of our students.
Home and Hospital Tutoring - This tutoring is provided to students who will be absent from school for an extended period of time due to illness or injury. Parents should direct requests for tutoring to the counselor or principal.
Support Services are available to students who qualify.
