School nurses do not regularly attend field trips. If necessary for a student’s medical needs, teachers and other school staff can volunteer to be trained by the school nurse to carry and assist self-directed students in taking a rescue medication like epinephrine or Auvi-Q.
If it is determined that a student is nurse-dependent to attend a field trip, the following options may be considered:
- The student’s parent/guardian may attend the field trip with the student.
- The parent/guardian may designate in writing another adult who is not employed by BCSD to voluntarily administer a medication to the student if needed. This adult should communicate with the school nurse and the parent/guardian after the field trip if a medication was required.
- The student’s parent/guardian in communication with their medical provider may adjust or eliminate the medication to accommodate the field trip.
- If a substitute nurse is able to attend the field trip for a particular student, the nurse will only be responsible for that student.
- If a substitute nurse cannot be obtained, and the parent/guardian or an alternate adult is not available, the field trip may need to be canceled and or/rescheduled.
