The Brighton Support Team (BST) is a building specific team of educators, including administrator(s), teachers, and specialists that meet regularly to collaborate on interventions to best meet individual student needs. The purpose of the team is to identify students’ academic, behavioral, and social-emotional strengths and challenges and provide differentiated support for students based on their needs. This includes meeting regularly to monitor student progress to review rates of adequate progress and/or determine if instructional change is needed. Parents/families are notified when the BST process has been initiated for their child. Parents/families are invited to participate at some point in the process.
The purpose of the BST process is to ensure students’ needs are met in the least restrictive environment possible, in accordance with federal and state laws. The district intends to follow this process before special education evaluation to allow adequate time for students to respond to Tier 2 and 3 interventions and potentially make gains in the area(s) of concern.
BST Process
The team will meet to create an intervention plan(s) based on the area(s) of concern.
Interventions are put in place for 6-8 weeks (as recommended by research) to allow adequate time for students to respond.
The team reconvenes to analyze data.
The next steps are determined based on the data.
Teams may decide to stay the course, if interventions are deemed effective.
The team may decide to change the goal, as needed.
The team may tweak or add to the current interventions to better meet the student’s needs.
The process will continue as determined by the team, likely over multiple sessions.
The process continues until the team determines the following:
If progress is sufficient and/or the goals have been met, the student will be exited from the process.
If progress is not sufficient, the team may recommend a special education evaluation.
